MODELLING COMPETITION
Nick Baines and Bob Alderman
The Modelling Competition was a long-time feature of Guildex, but in 2007 it was decided to take a break in order to have time for a re-think. Several problems had arisen, which caused a lot of trouble, often at the last minute, for the arrangers. One of the worst ones was the proliferation of competition classes, which had got to the point that sometimes it was difficult to know just which class in which a model should be entered. On occasions, a class would have only one entry.

Each class had its own trophy, each year the winner’s name was added to the trophy. Some of the trophies had been around for so long that there was no space left, and they would have to be replaced anyway. And finding judges was always a problem. Judging used to take up a large part of the Saturday, which did not leave much time to see the rest of the show.

The good news is that the competition will be back in 2008, in a completely new format that should make it easier to organize and run, and more importantly, should encourage participation. The full details and competition entry forms will be published in the May 2008 Gazette. For competition entrants, the principal changes will be a much smaller number of competition classes. For each class there will be first, second, and third prize winners in each class, so as to recognize modelling of high quality even if it does not quite reach the peaks. Prize winners will receive medals that they will keep permanently, rather than a trophy to be handed back before the next Guildex.

Judging will be done by you, as long as you attend Guildex on the Saturday. You will receive a ballot form, on which you can vote for your preferences in each class. The votes will be counted in order to determine the prize winners. Clearly, the more voters there are, the more representative will be the results, so be sure to add “Vote in the Modelling Competition” to your to-do list for Guildex 2008, along with shopping, visiting layouts, chatting with old friends, and all the other things.
